Demoted Staff Demands Open Apology From VC

A former academic staff of the Federal University, Otueke in Bayelsa state, Professor Leonard Karshima Shilgba has demanded a public apology from the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Seth Accra-Jaja, over a recent  publication  announcing his demotion from the rank of professor to senior lecturer. Shilga, currently with the Admiralty University in Delta State, made the demand in a letter dated December 20, 2018 with Ref: SHILNKA/FUO/VC/RS3. The letter, obtained by NATIONAL ACCORD, is titled:” Warning and Request for Rejoinder on Purported Demotion. Buhari urges ASUU to end strike

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities to call off the industrial action embarked upon by its members in the overall interest of the nation. “Consequently, I urge ASUU to suspend its ongoing industrial action in the overall national interest. “This administration is not unmindful of the fact that funding for education may not be adequate largely due to lean resources and other competing national needs. I want to assure Nigerians that we will continue to do the needful within the limited available resources,” he said. Federal University Otuoke Demotes Seven Professors To Lecturer Grade

SaharaReporters gathered that Eze, Nwadike, Shilgba and Nwabuzor had been at loggerheads with the Vice Chancellor, Accra Jaja, since he assumed office. The quartet were said to have received threat letters due to their stance against the VC's style of running the institution. Seven professors at the Federal University Otuoke, Ogbia, Bayelsa State, have been demoted from the title to the lecturer grade level by the institution. ASUU storms out of meeting with FG, strike to continue

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has staged a walkout from the meeting with a federal government delegation. The government delegation was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige. The university lecturers embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4, demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government. The National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to Monday’s meeting. The ASUU delegation arrived at the ministry at exactly 5:00 p.m. but no member of the federal government delegation was around as at this time. The government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, arrived at exactly 6:00 p.m. The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, was absent at the time the meeting started. ASUP: Strike continues as polytechnic lecturers’ meeting with govt deadlocked

Negotiations between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnics on Monday in Abuja ended in a deadlock, as both parties agreed to adjourn the meeting until a later date. The  News Agency of Nigeria  reports that ASUP embarked on a strike on December 12, over allegations that the Federal Government failed to keep its agreement with the union. ASUP National President, Mr Usman Duste, told newsmen at the end of the closed-door meeting that it was impossible to end the strike, as the issues in focus were still pending. “We have met with the government officials and we have discussed the issues thoroughly; however, it is not possible for us to resolve the strike in the meeting. All the issues were discussed, but we were unable to resolve them now and we have agreed to reconvene,” he said. ASUP Begins Strike, Academic Activities To Be Totally Grounded

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has disclosed that it will still go ahead with the planned nationwide strike tomorrow December 12th, 2018. This was made known by the National President of the union, Usman Dutse,during an interview with newsmen in Lagos. Mr Dutse said the strike became necessary following the failure of the federal government to implement the 2009 and 2017 agreements reached with the union. According to him, we are commencing our strike tomorrow as scheduled. Everything is set and there is no going back. He mentioned that there is an invitation for a meeting on December 17, but the union will still commence the strike on Wednesday “I don’t know what will happen at the meeting or what they have decided, but until we meet with them, we cannot predict. ”I don’t know what they plan to present until we meet with them,” he said. Another meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ended on Monday night without an immediate resolution of the dispute. The meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour was to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers. At least four other meetings have been held between both parties before Monday’s since the strike commenced on November 4. While addressing journalists, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, said the meeting has been adjourned to December 17. Mr Ngige said the federal government is taking all necessary steps to address ASUU’s demands. Mr Ngige had earlier appealed to the striking lecturers to ensure that Monday’s dialogue yields results that will lead to ending the strike. ”The strike is five weeks old today and it is not in anybody’s interest. Strike: FG, ASUU reach partial agreement, says Minister

The Federal Government and the striking  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a partial agreement, according to Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of labour nd enjoyment        Ngige made the announcement on Monday at a reconciliation meeting in Abuja aimed at finding ways of resolving the strike which commenced on November 5. “We have finished our deliberation for today.
